Big Dinghy at Richmond

This year's Big Dinghy at Richmond saw a variety of conditions over four races on Saturday, with moderate winds around 8-10 kts. spiking to mid-high teens in races 2 and 3 before shutting down completely right after race 4. Phillip and Bill won the series on Saturday in a mixed multihull fleet of 11 boats total. Of the other 3 F18s, Frank and Brian walked a way with third, while equipment issues hampered the north coast teams of Michael and Jose, who had to head back after race 2 with a torn kite, and Rich and Daisy, who were able to join the party for a while during race 3.

With a borrowed spinnaker (thanks, Dan!), Mike and Jose were back in the game and finished Sunday's pursuit race around Red Rock, the Southampton light, and Brooks Island with a very respectable 5th place in a 38-boat fleet. Frank and Brian were doing quite well until they went over not too far into the leg between Southampton and Brooks, which turned out to be a fast and hot reach in lumpy, short chop. Phillip and Bill let the frustration of the drifty conditions on the far side of Red Rock get to them and made the really dumb decision to split with the fleet, which stuffed them back into 12th by the end. The race was one by a really nice-looking Nacra F20 Carbon (behind Highwire in the pic above).

Thanks to Michael, Rich, and Daisy for making the trip down here.
