SFF18 January 2020 Update

posted Jan 28, 2020, 6:26 PM by sfformula18
Bay Area F18 sailors gathered at San Francisco Yacht Club in Tiberon, CA on Saturday, January 11th for dinner and
a meeting to discuss the fleet participation in bay area and regional races, as well as local fleet events. There was a
good turnout of twelve sailors eager for the season, as well as Charles Froeb’s hand-picked wine selections and
stories from our special guests.

We invited Andrew Macpherson, aka, “Macca”, former product manager for Nacra and Hobie, as well as coach for
Nacra 17 Olympic Teams and the China SailGP team, to speak about holding a fleet tuning and skills clinic in the
spring. Stay tuned for more information on where and when that will be happening. An impromptu clinic Macca
held for CRAW during a no wind day can be seen here: Macca’s videos are towards
the bottom.

Patrick Muglia, who crewed for Pete Melvin in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and works in the advanced composites
industry, joined us and told some great stories from that campaign. In attendance was James Melvin, Pete’s son,
who learned a few new stories about his Dad, including mast material and weight innovations that resulted in
some stricter regs for the Tornados post Olympics.

Bay Area and SoCal races were discussed that may be of interest to us, especially with F18 America’s being held in
San Diego. A shared Google Sheet has been established under the following link-please initial the races you think
you can participate in so we can start working with race committees:

The fleet is planning our first group sail during the San Francisco SailGP races, May 2-3. This will be an opportunity
to sail together but more importantly, showcase F18’s to attract new sailors to the fleet. We’re going to try and get
a static display of an F18 at St. Francis YC with contact information for people to get in touch with the fleet. It
would also be good to have the SFF18 website address on the boats, such as on the mast, sails, etc.

Stay tuned for updates on races, group sails and the clinic here on the website. Looking forward to a great season!
